The most common in process plants are differential pressure transmitters. However, there are level transmitters which use sonar-like transmitters, there are nuclear transmitters which read levels inside of metal tanks, there are transmitter which use a float.

A level sensor is used to sense level to be used for alarms or shutdown purposes.

The differential pressure transmitter is bench-calibrated mostly. This involves an air pressure supply and a precision low-pressure pressure gauge. The signal output of the most commonn level transmitter was, at the time of my retirement, a 4 to 20 ma signal. This signal range was calculated by using the span you wish to transmit expressed in inches. Then using the specific gravity of the liquid, the actual range of pressure (in inches of water) can be calculated. The transmitter is then calibrated to produce 4 ma at the lowest level, and 20 ma at the highest level. Both levels are expressed in inches of water column
